Are Smart Glasses Practical on the Job Site?

Builders are getting into Smart Glasses. Is it worth the hype? and the price tag...

I've been on calls with six different builders this past week who are all experimenting with smart glasses. A couple of them are already buying pairs for their field teams. The rest are execs poking at it, trying to figure out if there's a real use case in here or just a gadget.

So I went out on a large commercial build to see for myself.

It was loud enough out there that I could not hear the guy standing one foot away from me. The Meta glasses running Hardline got every single word he said, and handed it back as a formatted punch list. Everyone thought it was pretty cool, but it got me thinking: how jobsite proof is expensive novelty hardware like this?

The two things builders need

All six of those calls came down to the same two requirements. Can it hear me over the saws, and can it see what I'm seeing.

A phone in a chest pocket hears your voice, a compressor, a chop saw and a skid steer backing up at the same volume, with no idea which one matters. Glasses put the mic on your face, aimed at your mouth, and leave your ears open. It's pretty damn accurate.

That's also where the tools people already tried run out of road. Granola is a good product built for a conference room, waiting on a calendar invite and a laptop, and neither one of those exists on a site walk. Plaud got closer, because Plaud understood you have to be in the room, so they shipped hardware for it. Now you're asking a foreman to carry one more thing, charge one more thing, and hit a button before a conversation he didn't know was coming. And clipped to his chest, it's in the same bad spot his phone was. Better mic, wrong place.

That's the whole rough history of hardware out here. Every few years somebody straps a new device to a worker (hard-hat AR rigs, headsets, pendants, badges) and the device loses. Not because the idea was wrong. Because it was one more thing to carry, charge, lose, or get told to take off at the gate.

Glasses are the first version where the device was already on his face.

The second requirement is the one that's been contested since day one.

The camera is what gets them banned

Last month someone posted that his job had officially banned smart glasses. 188 comments followed, and it's people in healthcare, banking and IT saying their employer did the exact same thing.

Secure floors, hospital wings, data centers, government work. The camera makes people squirmy and it's a valid reason. Meta shipped tighter safeguards on the indicator light this July, but nothing that answers a client who just doesn't want lenses walking their floor. Which is the practical case for owning a pair without one.

What "practical" actually means at the gate

Every piece of tech that has survived on a jobsite clears the same two bars, and neither one is about capability.

It has to get through the gate. On most commercial sites that means rated eye protection, ANSI Z87.1, not a nice pair of sunglasses. A lot of consumer smart glasses aren't rated, and Meta's own support team will tell you theirs are built for casual daily use rather than industrial environments.

And it can't ask for attention. Ten hours, dust, heat, gloves on in February, and not one spare second to stand there coaxing a device into working. Gesture controls and touchpads are where this falls apart fast.

The screen is the part nobody needs

I'm not the only one landing here. A construction manager in Canada wore a display pair on his sites for three weeks and came out the other side using that display for exactly two things: a photo preview and text notifications. Everything else, GPS, calendar, the built-in assistant, he called gimmicky or not ready yet.

The most useful part was the audio: "It filters out background sounds extremely well on job sites. I can dictate notes on site while ensuring my ears are unobstructed."

Which tracks with the actual job. A super takes 50 to 100 phone calls a day. Some on a ladder. Some with a tape in one hand and a pencil in the other. Some mid-walk with a sub who wants an answer on grid line C right now. Almost none of it gets written down, and not because he doesn't want the note. Because his hands are full and his phone is in his pocket.

So are they worth the investment?

A cautious yes, and I'll be specific about the caution.

Two of the three things I expected to block this are already solved. There are ANSI Z87.1 rated pairs that will clear your safety gate, and there are options with cameras and options without, so a client who bans cameras doesn't end your rollout before it starts.

Battery is the one that isn't solved.

Meta rates Gen 2 at up to eight hours, the Oakley Vanguard around nine, and the display pair at six. Lucyd claims eight. Those are manufacturer numbers on mixed use, and a super who's on the phone most of the day is going to land under them. Against a ten hour shift, none of these clear it clean.

The charging cases help (Gen 2's case carries another 48 hours) but a case only helps if he takes them off, and he is not going to remember to at hour six.

So plan for it. Glasses come off at lunch and go in the case, or you buy the longer-battery pair, or you accept that the back half of the day runs on the phone the way it does today. Not a dealbreaker. Just don't find out on day three.

With that said, you've got two ways in. Consumer glasses with cameras in them, which some of your guys may already own. Or camera-free smart safety glasses that come ANSI rated out of the box and cost about what a decent pair of eye pro costs.

Here's what each one actually runs you, per head:

→ Lucyd Armor, ANSI Z87.1 rated, no camera: $149

→ Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, not rated: $379

→ Oakley Meta Vanguard, IP67 for dust and water (not impact): $500

→ Meta Ray-Ban Display, the one with the screen: $799

The rated, camera-free pair is the cheapest thing on that list by a factor of five. That is not how a compliance decision usually goes in this industry, and it's most of why my answer is yes.

Hardline works on both. Client's site bans cameras? Buy the camera-free rated pair and nothing about the workflow changes. Guys already own Metas? They just pair them.

Pair whatever's on your face, make your phone calls like usual (with the super, the supplier, the foreman, the architect), and Hardline takes the notes, pulls the tasks, writes the daily log and the punch item, then pushes all of it into Procore, Fieldwire or Autodesk.

Adoption isn't the part I'd worry about. Our top users turn 80 to 100 phone calls into tasks, daily logs and RFI follow-ups inside the first 24 hours, because nobody asked them to learn anything.

How I'd test it on your own jobs

If you'd rather find out for yourself than take my word for it, this is a cheap thing to test. Two supers, one job, thirty days, whatever pair clears your safety gate.

Three things to measure, and none of them are "did they like it":

→ Calls captured per super in week four, not week one. Week one is novelty. Week four is habit.

→ Daily logs submitted on time versus your other jobs.

→ How many times you had to chase somebody for a punch item that was already verbally agreed to.

If those numbers move with two guys in thirty days, you know what a rollout looks like. If they don't, you're out a few hundred bucks and a month.

So the real question for anybody piloting this right now: are you evaluating glasses, or are you evaluating what happens to your jobs once your guys stop having to write anything down?

Because the glasses are the commodity here. There are four pairs on that list and there'll be eight by next year, and I don't particularly care which one ends up on your foreman's face. A mic on your face that turns into a transcript nobody reads is just a nicer version of the problem you already have. It only pays for itself if that conversation comes back as a punch item with an owner on it, in Procore, before he gets to his truck.

Are smart glasses practical on a construction job site? Yes, with a caveat. The mic is the part that earns its keep: hands-free notes over saw noise with your ears open. ANSI Z87.1 rated pairs and camera-free pairs exist, so the safety gate and the camera bans are solved. Battery is the open question, since no pair cleanly covers a ten hour shift.

Are there ANSI Z87.1 rated smart glasses? Yes. Lucyd Armor is ANSI Z87.1 rated, has no camera, and runs $149, about what a decent pair of eye pro costs. Most consumer smart glasses, including the Ray-Ban Metas, are not rated for impact.

Can you wear Meta Ray-Bans on a construction site? Depends on your safety gate. Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is not ANSI Z87.1 rated, and Meta's own support team says they're built for casual daily use, not industrial environments. If your site requires rated eye protection they will not clear the gate, and camera bans knock them off secure projects entirely.

How long does smart glasses battery last on a 10-hour shift? Not the whole shift. Manufacturer numbers on mixed use run from six hours (Meta Ray-Ban Display) to about nine (Oakley Meta Vanguard), with Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 and Lucyd Armor claiming eight. A super on the phone all day lands under those numbers, so plan for a lunch charge (Gen 2's case carries another 48 hours) or let the back half of the day run on the phone.

Why do some job sites ban smart glasses? The camera. Clients in healthcare, banking, data centers, and government work do not want lenses walking their floors, and no indicator light answers that. Camera-free rated pairs like the Lucyd Armor exist for exactly this reason, so a ban does not have to end a rollout.
